Dank moderner Digitalkameras sammelt sich schon nach kurzer Zeit eine große Menge von digitalen Bildern auf dem eigenen PC an. Um hierbei den Überblick zu behalten, gesuchte Bilder schnell zu finden, möglicherweise zu bearbeiten und auch noch anderen zu präsentieren (sei es als Diaschau oder im Internet) eignet sich das kostenlose Programm Picasa sehr gut. Die Veranstaltung beschäftigt sich deshalb mit den Grundfunktionen von Picasa zur Bildverwaltung, zeigt aber auch die weiterführenden Möglichkeiten wie einfache Retusche und Optimierung sowie die verschiedenen Präsentationsmöglichkeiten.

I will be at the 2010 DOAG Conference in Nürnberg and will participate in two presentations on the 17th of November:

Both presentations will be in room "Riga" starting at 9 am and 10 am respectively.

A short summary of the contents:

Apex als Grundlage für effizientes Tennis-Trainingsmanagement

Wichtiger Erfolgsfaktor für einen modernen Tennistrainer ist die Kundenbindung: Neben der Qualität des Tennistrainings gewinnt die Planung und Durchführung von Events immer mehr an Bedeutung. Je nach Anzahl der Kunden und betreuten Vereinen ist dann die Planung, Durchführung und Abrechnung von Trainerstunden und Durchführung von Veranstaltungen eine umfangreiche Aufgabe, die sich mit "Spontan-Excel-Tabellen" nicht mehr realisieren lässt. Trainerstunden werden vom Schüler z. B. wegen Erkrankung abgesagt - eine bedienungsfreundliche Web-Schnittstelle ermöglicht dies komfortabel rund um die Uhr (unabhängig von Öffnungs- oder Telefonzeiten) durchzuführen. Missverständnisse und Abrechnungsprobleme werden so auch vermieden. In diesem Beitrag soll deshalb die Tennistrainings-Management-Lösung GBPTENNIS vorgestellt werden, die auf Grundlage der Oracle Express Edition mit Application Express (Apex) implementiert wurde. Sie implementiert dabei schrittweise ein Konzept, das im Rahmen einer Diplomarbeit an der Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg entwickelt wurde und nun in der Praxis eingesetzt werden soll. Im Mittelpunkt der Anwendung steht dabei die Integration von internen Prozessen (wie z. B. der Planung eines Events, Planung von Trainerstunden und die damit im Zusammenhang stehenden Abrechnungen) und die Darstellung, Bewerbung und Anmeldung auf der öffentlich verfügbaren Website http://www.gbptennis.de. Die Anwendung wird schrittweise in Richtung auf ein vollständiges Werkzeug zum Management einer Tennis-Schule weiterentwickelt.

Erfolgreiches Alumni-Management mit Oracle Application Express

Ein wichtiges Qualitätskriterium für eine moderne Hochschule ist das Ranking in den verschiedenen, auch internationalen, Vergleichen. Dabei wird als ein Faktor, neben der Bewertung von Lehre und Forschung, auch die Qualität der Bindung von Ehemaligen (Alumni) an die Hochschule bewertet. Deshalb organisieren die Hochschulen in Form von Förder- und Alumniorganisationen ihre Ehemaligen. Je nach Größe der Alumniorganisation (beispielsweise bei der Goethe Finance Association (GFA) an der Universität Frankfurt über 1.800 Mitglieder) ist dann das Management von Mitgliedern und Planung und Durchführung von Veranstaltungen mit den Förderunternehmen eine umfangreiche Aufgabe, die sich mit Ad-Hoc-Excel-Tabellen nicht mehr realisieren lässt. In diesem Beitrag soll deshalb die Alumni-Management-Lösung GFA3 vorgestellt werden, die auf Grundlage der Oracle Express Edition mit Application Express (Apex) implementiert wurde. Im Mittelpunkt der Anwendung steht dabei die enge Verzahnung von internen Prozessen (wie z. B. der Planung eines Events) und die Darstellung und Bewerbung auf der öffentlich verfügbaren Website http://www.gfa-frankfurt.org.

I took the opportunity to install a fresh Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on my main Linux server and workstation to change finally to the 64 bit version. Additionally I introduced an "Icy Box Trayless IB-168SK" for easy swapping of the secondary HD.

I really like this device and will integrate it into my other computers with the walk of time ;-)

Oracle, APEX and BMW

As I made my first experiences with Application Express (APEX) within a project I made for BMW, the following news was great for me:

As Conrad.de offers this WLAN USB adapter for € 9.95 at the moment, I decided to try one with Ubuntu 9.10.

Having a Realtek chipset - as the earlier described HAMA stick - just swapping the 2 sticks was successful!

So sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-karmic is the solution here also!

Is there any cheaper Ubuntu compatible WLAN stick?

As my parents asked for their own HTPC, I built one for them ;-)

This time I am using an Asus M3N78-VM motherboard with an AMD Athlon II X2 240 CPU and 2 GB RAM as basis, again in a Digitainer case. A 1 TB WD10EADS harddisk from Western Digital completes the system, no optical drive has been installed so far. The motherboard is larger than the one I used to refurbish my Digitainer, but it just fits into the case.

Software is again Ubuntu 9.10 amd64 and XBMC.

HTPC and LCD

When I first connected my old (but refurbished) HTPC via VGA to the LG LCD TV the screen resolution was auto configured to 1360 x 768. Changing via nvidia-settings to 1920 x 1080 was only possible for the running session and gone after reboot.

Trying to make it permanently via the "Save configuration to X conf" button resulted only in "Failed to parse existing X config file ‘/etc/X11/xorg.conf’"...

Solution was found at Wetware:
recreate xorg.conf with sudo nvidia-xconfig and save the settings permanently with sudo nvidia-settings afterwards ;-)

Recently I had to configure two servers on older hardware, in both projects I chose Ubuntu 9.10 32bit Server edition as base for the systems.

Server 1 (AMD Athlon Processor 1.1 GHz, 640 MByte RAM) is an internal file server with remote access via SSH and Apache on the stored files.
Server 2 (AMD Sempron Processor 3000+, 768 MByte RAM) publishes an Oracle Apex driven website with about 10.000 views per month.

For remote administration webmin is being used in both cases.

Just got a Nokia E71 - nice little machine, which fulfills all my communication needs. Works perfectly with Google Maps and GMail.

For synchronizing the calendar with the Google calendar I use goosync.com.

Upgrading from Ubuntu 8.10 to 9.04 on my DELL Inspiron 8600 with Broadcom WLAN failed. A complete new install from CD worked perfectly.

Today I installed Oracle XE on the new Xubuntu 9.04 - it worked ;-)

Minor problem was that XE forgot the passwords given on installation for SYSTEM and SYS, so it was impossible to login to APEX.

Solution was:

su - oracle
sqlplus /NOLOG
connect / as sysdba
ALTER user system identified by new_password;
ALTER user sys identified by new_password;

While developing a new Apex application, suddenly the browser asked for XDB credentials instead of showing the pages. I am not sure what caused this problem, but the solution was to unlock the users SYSTEM and ANONYMOUS which suddenly were locked.

Today I replaced the 80 GB hard disk in my Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo 7424 notebook with a 160 GB Western Digital Scorpio - works perfectly ;-)

With the release of Gutsy Gibbon I installed Oracle XE on it - works without any problems ;-)

Having acquired a Sanyo PL-VZ 2 projector, I started my home theatre project.

Equipment so far:

Sanyo PL-VZ 2
DVDO iScan HD
Kenwood KRF-V 6070

The projector is not ceiling-mounted, it rests on top of my shelf....

Picasa crashes?

If Picasa crashes while uploading pictures or sending them per email: Updating the Intel wireless driver 2200BG helps!

A similiar problem with Pegasus Mail, which suddenly crashed while sending email, was also cured by the update.

End-user configurable help in Apex

Let's assume the following scenario:

We have an application developed by A for B, B wants to be able to add and edit help information on the pages of the application, but has no access to the development environment of Apex.

1. Create a table HELP with 3 columns:

"HELP" VARCHAR2(4000),
constraint "HELP_PK" primary key ("ID")

CREATE sequence "HELP_SEQ"

CREATE trigger "BI_HELP"

select "HELP_SEQ".nextval into :NEW.ID from dual;

2. Create a "report and form" on this table in your application, they will be used for maintaining the help table.

3. Create a help region on Page 0 as report region, use the following SQL:

select help from HELP where page = &APP_PAGE_ID. and help is not NULL

Condition for this region: select help from HELP where page = &APP_PAGE_ID. and help is not NULL returns at least one row.

4. Using the report and form from step 2 an authorized user can create and edit the help text for the pages: the page number goes into PAGE, the text into HELP.

Update

Today I have updated my Ubuntu 6.10 server to 7.04 without any problems.

Additionally I installed XE on the machine - worked perfectly.

As a precaution I always use the "real" root in Ubuntu for installing XE, as I ran into some troubles with doing it with "sudo" some months ago.

A380

Finally, I had the chance to see the A380 flying.

After missing the first opportunity in 2005, because of waiting on the wrong side of FRA airport in the fog, my chance came on 27th March 2007.

Having arrived at the spotters point at runway 18W just a few minutes before, the A380 landed on runway 07L.

A while ago I promised tips & tricks .... well, for starters:

Supporting the end users of an Apex application is much easier, when they can tell you the relevant page number. Of course it is in the URL (as long as the Apex URL is not hidden, e.g. with a frame redirect), but in my experience end users like a more explicit way of getting the information.

For this reason, I include &APP_PAGE_ID. in the Navigation Bar of my application.

Linux and Oracle

Installing XE on a Windows server worked always like a charm for me.

Having a Suse 9.3 based virtual server from Strato, I tackled the issue of installing XE on Linux.

As my experience with Linux got a little rusty over the past years (installed a server 4 years ago and no need to touch it again...) I tried installing XE on Suse 9.3, Suse 10.1 and Ubuntu 6.10 ... worked perfectly following the guides from Oracle. :-)

Thousands of people watched from both sides of the Main - even the weather played along!
